“How many cervezas do you want me to bring?” My wife called out.
“Ahh, just a few,” I replied. “Do you mind throwing in an extra layer in case the ocean breeze is chilly?” I asked.
Each winter, my family and I like to escape to the warm waters of the Baja, Mexico. The warm temperatures, sandy beaches, and friendly people make it an enjoyable, international adventure. What to bring? Go light and go fast. Some shorts, a shirt or two, and a pair of flip flops. Call it good! Oh, don’t forget our favorite beach bag. We prefer Pelican’s DayVenture Cooler/Backpack!
Yep, Pelican, known for their bomb-proof photography and storage cases, designs worthy adventure gear. Pelican got its start in 1976 when the founder, Dave Parker, needed a high-quality equipment solution for his SCUBA gear. Whether for the military or the weekend adventurer, Pelican continues to design and engineers workable, high-quality storage solutions—a 50 year legacy.
Storage concerns are pretty basic when wandering the beaches of Baja Sur—a few beers, a layer or two, and a place to store valuables. In years past, we would use a flimsy, cheap cooler in either a hard-sided model or a soft bag. By the end of our trips, the same thing would happen each and every time. Ice would melt and/or the cooler would self-destruct. The solution?

Pelican’s DayVenture Cooler/Backpack is a robust pack, ready for a serious adventure. Throw it on a roof rack? Check. Drag it over sand and rocks? Check. Yes, the DayVenture Cooler/Pack is ready for the use and abuse of Baja or at any local beach. The pack itself is split into upper and lower parts. The lower part is a designated cooler that can store up to a six pack of your refreshment of choice; the upper part can hold dry goods such as layers, snacks, equipment, and gear. In total, there is 19 quarts of storage space. Truly a perfect beach pack indeed! The pack/cooler is equipped with an added storage sleeve on the outside of the pack. The lower cooler part is equipped with a water-resistant zipper; a roll top closure for the upper part enables simple and fast access to the upper part of the pack. We appreciate the pack’s padded shoulder straps and the general, overall feel of the pack. I comfortably wore it through the vibrant streets of Todos Santos and while fishing in the big blue of the Pacific Ocean.

The exterior of the cooler/pack is made of a tough, durable thermoplastic polyurethane, which basically means it’s made of a heavy-duty plastic designed to take years of abuse and to resist punctures and tears. The DayVenture pack/cooler comes with a three-year warranty.
We simply stocked a few mineral waters and cervezas in the bottom of the pack, a couple of towels, sunblock, and snacks in the top of the pack for our hike to the beach to spot blue and gray whales. The pack/cooler made our beach days simple and easy. Pack it and go! The pack/cooler’s robust construction enables it to withstand years of Baja abuse or any local, state-side beach, park, or trek.
