Four Wheel Flatbed Hawk Camper

Four wheel campers, fwy, pop up life, pop up campers, overlanding, over land, overland, off-road, off-roading, off road, vehicle supported adventure,

I’ve spent the last 4 years driving a JKU, so when I jumped in behind the wheel of the Ram 3500/FWC Flatbed Hawk Camper combo, my first impression was that it was a BEAST. I’m not going to lie, I was a little intimidated by the thought of driving it on the southern Californian freeways, let alone off-road. However, once behind the wheel, it didn’t take more than a few miles to relax and realize that freeway driving was pretty easy and the Cummins 6.7L engine allowed the rig to fly whenever I needed to put my foot down.

The plan was to spend a week in the rig and make my way from San Diego to the Lost Sierra region. First stop was Alabama Hills in Lone Pine, where I’d spend a couple of days and then on to the hopefully snow-covered trails north of Truckee.

All in all, I drove just over 1200 miles and camped primitively 6 nights. I experienced dry conditions, but strong winds in the eastern Sierra foothills and driving snow and temperatures in the mid 20’s in the High Sierra.

Although a week in any rig is never an exhaustive test, it did provide me with a solid introduction to Popup Life.  Here are my impressions:

Ram 3500/FWC Flatbed Hawk camper combo

As indicated, this is a big rig combo and a real commitment to the lifestyle. For those wanting to spend a lot of time on the road, the RAM’s power and comfort truly enhanced the driving experience. It was easy to sit back and cruise, knowing that if you had to make a quick decision to overtake a semi-truck, you could accomplish it with ease. For me, long road trips with a heavily laden and underpowered rig are exhausting, so this was a pleasant change. The rig’s cabin space was also significant and if I owned this rig, I’d pull out the rear seats and build out storage drawers for all my camera gear.

Exterior Storage:

The Flatbed Hawk Camper itself had a good amount of storage space, both inside and out. The great advantage of the aluminum flatbed tray by Norweld, is that it provides copious storage drawers and lockers for all the gear you need, but don’t use on a regular basis. I’m talking tools, recovery gear, blocks and outside camp gear. In addition to the tray, were two large rear lockable boxes by Buckstop.

The beauty of all this exterior storage, is that it allows the interior to be focused on gear used for daily living, like clothing, bedding and cooking.

Interior Storage:

There is a good amount of interior storage, with cavernous space provided under both dinette seats. In addition, the bed lifts and provides quite a significant storage space underneath. This feature is only available on the flatbed camper. To supplement these areas, there are small drawers and cupboards located in the galley that provide space for cooking and housekeeping needs.

Interior Layout and Features:

At the rear of the camper is a two-seater dinette with ample room to comfortably sit at the small table. I try to spend as much time living outside as possible when camping, but this was an appreciated feature when we were being pounded by snow in the Lost Sierra. The dinette is surrounded on three sides by windows, so it was cool to sit in the warmth and watch the snowfall.

Four wheel campers, fwy, pop up life, pop up campers, overlanding, over land, overland, off-road, off-roading, off road, vehicle supported adventure, Flatbed Hawk Camper,

The galley area provided a large fridge, small propane stove and small sink. Overall, it’s a small galley area, but perfectly adequate for the road.

Other options provided in this rig, were 20-gallon water tank, a propane furnace and cassette toilet. It was fantastic to reach out of bed each morning and crank up the furnace before making coffee. Regarding the toilet, I’m ambivalent about it, but certainly my wife would be a big advocate.

Four wheel campers, fwy, pop up life, pop up campers, overlanding, over land, overland, off-road, off-roading, off road, vehicle supported adventure,

The final feature is the slide out Queen sized bed. It’s Comfortable and spacious and I liked the fact that a third of it slid away to give greater interior space when not being used. Additionally, the dinette converts into a small bed. Overall, the interior design was well thought out and it had a professional build quality.

Life on the Trail:

As I said, this is a big rig and what you gain in storage and comfort you lose in maneuverability on the trail. The size of the vehicle curtailed my usual blasé approach to exploring. Despite the RAM being a fairly capable rig on 37’s, there were a few occasions I ended up having to do 16-point turn, when the trail became too rugged, narrow or blocked by snow. On one occasion, I did get myself stuck, but it was an easy extraction. In general, momentum was my friend and the large tires and vehicle plowed through most of the snow and mud with relative ease.

Four wheel campers, fwy, pop up life, pop up campers, overlanding, over land, overland, off-road, off-roading, off road, vehicle supported adventure,

Conclusions:

When you buy a rig for overland adventure, it’s necessary to have a clear understanding of what is important to you. As I’ve mentioned, a rig this size, despite being decently capable off road, will have some limitations on the trail. Where it shines is in the camping arena and is truly built for road trips and living in comfort off the grid. If your overland favorites are places like Trona Pinnacles or Alstrom Point or taking a trip down to Baja, then this is the rig for you and you’ll have enormous fun living off the grid for multiple days.

To conclude, I see this rig as a perfect middle ground overlanding vehicle. It’s got bigger tires and more clearance than a Sprinter and it’s just as comfortable and functional. This allows it to straddle both front and backcountry terrain with ease.

mxt575, midland radio, two way radio, gmrs,

The MXT575 MicroMobile® Two-Way Radio boasts 50-Watts of GMRS power. This is the most powerful radio allowed by law.

Unlike the MXT500, the MXT575 has a Fully-Integrated Control Microphone, meaning all the controls are on the microphone itself. This allows you to stash the radio unit away in order to avoid crowding your dashboard space.

This radio is narrow and wide band capable, an exciting feature for all radio users.

The MXT575 also includes a USB-C charging port to give your other devices like tablets, cellphones, and walkie talkies the fastest charge time there is.

Whether you’re using this as a base station or installing it in your car, the MXT575 is compatible with all Midland FRS and GMRS walkie talkies.

“We are extremely excited to be able to launch a second 50 Watt radio in 2022. The MXT575 is a 50 Watt version of our most popular MicroMobile, the MXT275. Users love the MXT275 because all of the controls are available on the microphone. This allows them to hide the large radio unit under their seat, while only mounting their microphone on the dashboard. Off-roaders are often limited on dash-space, so this is a very important feature for them,” Midland Radio Product Manager, Zak Al-Shawish said.

Escapade Backcountry X Trailer

Escapade Backcountry trailer, off-road trailer, Escapade, teardrop trailers, teardrop, overland trailer, overland, overlanding, off-road, off-roading, vehicle supported adventure.

Recently we got our hands on a fully loaded Escapade Backcountry X trailer and took it on a 1356 mile trip from southern California to southern Utah and back. We camped primitively for 6 nights and traversed 156 off-road miles, which included easy fire roads to moderately difficult remote backcountry trails. The following is our impression of the trailer after pushing it hard in the backcountry.

Escapade Backcountry trailer, off-road trailer, Escapade, teardrop trailers, teardrop, overland trailer, overland, overlanding, off-road, off-roading, vehicle supported adventure.

Escapade Backcountry X – Basic stats:

  • Weight: 1850- 2000 lbs (with all upgrades included)
  • Length: 15’
  • Height: 81”
  • Width: 90”
  • Ground Clearance: 20”
  • Tongue Weight: 225 lbs

Off-road upgrade package:

  • HD Timbren Axle- less suspension 2” lift
  • 235/85/16 Falken Wildpeak AT3W Tires
  • Height adjustable “Lock and Roll” Coupler

Towing capability:

For reference, the tow rig on this trip was TAP’s highly modified 2019 TAP TRD Off-Road 4Runner. The trailer tracked beautifully both on the insane and heavily trafficked LA Freeways and also on the remote backcountry Utah trails. At no point during the 1356 miles, did we ever feel that the trailer wasn’t locked in behind us and following the line of the rig perfectly. At a fully loaded tow weight of around 2000 lbs, we easily managed to cruise on the freeway at 70+, dropping down to 60+ on steep inclines. MPG on the road was around 12, down from our usual average of 14.8. Off-road it dropped further to 11mpg.

We’ve not used a Timbren Axle-Less suspension before and had heard mixed opinions. On the road and trail it felt stable and easily sucked up bumps and drops. It seemed equally at home at freeway speeds, washboard trails and dropping off small rock ledges. After a week of use in varied conditions, we have nothing but praise for it.

Escapade Backcountry trailer, off-road trailer, Escapade, teardrop trailers, teardrop, overland trailer, overland, overlanding, off-road, off-roading, vehicle supported adventure.

We should also mention that the adjustable “Lock and Roll” coupler undoubtedly helped with the smooth ride. Note: Escapade informs us that this has now been changed to the Max Coupler system, which in our opinion is an even better system.

Finally, ground clearance on the Backcountry X is an impressive 20”, although despite this, we still managed to touch down a couple of times.

Build quality and construction:

Our overall impression of the Escapade Backcountry X is that it is a solid and well-built trailer. It certainly handled a very hard week on the road and trails with ease.

The trailer frame is made of 2″ x 3” powder coated steel and the body of the trailer has a seamless fiberglass exterior.  This fiberglass layer has a fully coated Raptor liner at the front and floor, with mountain styled side panels to protect it against road and trail debris. The trailer walls, roof and floor also have a radiant insulation barrier, which we appreciated when the overnight temps hit 23 degrees. To finish up, the interior uses ¾” UV finished maple, giving a professional finish.

Comfort and cabin interior options:

At 60” wide and 80” long, the sleeping area is spacious for two people, and we never felt cramped or claustrophobic. As previously mentioned, the cabin is well insulated and despite the 23-degree temps we experienced, we were toasty. The trailer comes standard with two passive air vents and a Maxxair Deluxe powered roof vent with built in rain shield. Two side windows give light and ventilation, with two access doors finishing off the structure.

Regarding comfort, the bed option in this trailer was the 6” Tri Fold Mattress and was fantastic.

Escapade Backcountry trailer, off-road trailer, Escapade, teardrop trailers, teardrop, overland trailer, overland, overlanding, off-road, off-roading, vehicle supported adventure.

Two additional options that come with this trailer are a heater and air conditioner. They work with shore power or a 2200-watt generator, so in our opinion are more of a front country feature. Wrapping up the list of interior options are front shelves that house the 12-volt power and 2 x USB ports (+voltage reader). Despite our best intentions, we always fail at keeping everything tidy while camping, so the shelves were extremely useful. The ability to charge our phones overnight was also a nice feature.

Galley:

The Backcountry X trailer comes with two galley options. One is truly minimalist, and the other is moderately minimalist. The trailer we tested came with the latter option which included general shelving, a small utensil drawer and an ARB 63L fridge on a locking slide out.  Having spent a week with this galley layout, our biggest critique is the lack of a pull-out table. We’d even sacrifice the size of the fridge (going down to 44L) to allow this to work. We used the shelves for storage and found that they provide ample space, although that meant that a separate table had to be set up to cook on and the fridge top became the defacto general workspace. No doubt, some customers may be looking for a more built out galley and we’d certainly recommend this as a second upgrade.

Exterior Options:

  • Toolbox and front Rack combo: We found the rack to be useful for storing a 20-gallon propane tank and shovel. It would also be an excellent place for carrying firewood. The toolbox housed the trailer battery and various small tools. Unfortunately, despite sealing strips, it failed to stand up against the fine Utah dust.
Escapade Backcountry trailer, off-road trailer, Escapade, teardrop trailers, teardrop, overland trailer, overland, overlanding, off-road, off-roading, vehicle supported adventure.
  • Yakima 7g Roadshower: We’ve used these before and certainly appreciated the ability on the road to take a shower or simply rinse off dishes. Recommended.
Escapade Backcountry trailer, off-road trailer, Escapade, teardrop trailers, teardrop, overland trailer, overland, overlanding, off-road, off-roading, vehicle supported adventure.
  • Rhino Rack 270-degree Batwing Awning: Despite heavy winds on our trip, we used this on multiple occasions to shade us from the harsh southern UT sun and would certainly recommend this option.
  • 190-Watt Solar Panel package: If you’re anything like us, you take a lot of camera gear on your trips to record your adventures. This system worked perfectly and was excellent at keeping the fridge and our gear charged each day. Highly recommend.
Escapade Backcountry trailer, off-road trailer, Escapade, teardrop trailers, teardrop, overland trailer, overland, overlanding, off-road, off-roading, vehicle supported adventure.

Conclusion:

Simply put, the Escapade Backcountry X lived up to its name. It’s a well-built trailer that impressed us on and off the trail. Most importantly it was comfortable to spend a week in and we took it to places and put it through weather conditions that truly tested it. As we indicated, we’d like to see the Deluxe Galley option built out further, with a pull out table included.

All in all, the Escapade Backcountry X is a great looking, trail rated trailer. With a solid standard feature list and a starting price of $18,900, it is excellent value for money.

Tupike Camp Stove- Primus

primus stove, tupike, camp cooking, overland stove, overland, overlanding, off-road, off-roading, vehicle supported adventure,

I’m hard on camp stoves and I probably go through one every couple of years. Most of the time it’s my own fault, as I’m not careful and tend to throw them in the back of the rig without worrying if they bounce around. Knowing this trait, I also tend to buy inexpensive overland stoves, as why waste money (or is it false economy?) With this in mind, I was excited to try out the Primus Tupike Camp Stove and the Campfire cookset collection, to see if they would take the inevitable abuse.

primus stove, tupike, camp cooking, overland stove, overland, overlanding, off-road, off-roading, vehicle supported adventure,

Stove Stats:

  • Weight: 9.5lb
  • Dimensions: 18.7” x 11.6” x 3.2”
  • Output: 10,200 BTU; 3000W (x2)

Stove Construction:

  • Stainless steel body and leg supports
  • Oak laths and brass detailing
  • Stainless steel drip pan.

Stove Features:

  • Dual burners run independently and allow you to cook multiple pots at different temperatures
  •  Piezo ignition, no lighter required
  • The lid and foldable side windscreens ensure steady heat for cooking, even in windy conditions
  • Designed to be carried, the wood-trimmed handle locks the stove closed while a spring-action locking mechanism keeps the regulator in place
  • Removable pot supports and stainless steel drip tray for easy cleaning
  • Steel legs raise the grill and lock into place to give you more table space, and fold away for transport
  • Included non-stick griddle plate grills, toasts, melts cheese, and is easy to clean.

First impressions and 8 Months on:

I received the Tupike camp stove September last year and on opening up the packaging, I was stunned by how beautiful the stove and pots look (see opening photo). Not that that’s important for camping, but it was hard not to be impressed by the Swedish design aesthetic. To be honest, they almost seemed too nice to use!

Well, the stove doesn’t look quite so pretty anymore, but still performs excellently. It’s been on the road for 8 months and travelled thousands of miles in the back of the rig. It’s seen 40mph winds, driving rain and temps in the teens and has yet to let me down.

primus stove, tupike, camp cooking, overland stove, overland, overlanding, off-road, off-roading, vehicle supported adventure,

Thoughts after Field Testing:

  • This is a well-made and robust product and despite plenty of use, it’s as solid as the first time it was used and is still without any excess play in the handle, hinges or legs.
  • The burner knobs feel solid (this is a part I usually break) and still work as expected. The same goes with the Piezo ignition switches, that light the burners on first push.
  • The two burners are low profile and push out a ton of heat. They are unfortunately relatively small and tend to concentrate said heat in a smallish diameter on the pot. Without careful attention this can lead to burning of food. I’m used to it now, but I was caught out a few times initially.
  • The stainless steel drip tray is easy to remove and clean and is dish washer friendly. (did I say clean the tray…lol)
  • The pot supports are a coated metal and can also be easily removed for cleaning. The serrated teeth keep the pot steady.
  • The stove legs are metal with rubber pads. They work fine and fold down for storage. I do however think they should lock in place for true stability.
  • The wind guards don’t work very well. There, I said it! They are too small and offer poor protection from the wind. They also don’t lock in place. Obviously, there isn’t any wind in Sweden?
  • The gas regulator (works with isobutane canisters) tucks conveniently up under the bottom of the stove for storage. It took me a month to figure this out, but it’s a good design feature.
  • The stove performed to my expectations and heats a litre of water in just under 4 minutes. This potentially could be improved if the wind guards were more effective. One criticism I do have, is the difficulty in judging flame size for simmering, as the indicator is fairly difficult to judge. Eventually you get used to it, but even after 8 months I occasionally still misjudge it.
primus stove, tupike, camp cooking, overland stove, overland, overlanding, off-road, off-roading, vehicle supported adventure,

Final thoughts:

I love the Tupike camp stove!

The design, performance and quality have impressed me. Yes, there are quirks that I’d like to see changed (wind guards!) but honestly, I’ve never met a product where I don’t think this. * I also think the carrying case shouldn’t be an extra $65. It should come standard.

As a quality product that indicates that it will last for years, I highly recommend it.

EarthCruiser Overland Vehicles announced today that its next generation of EXP and FX EarthCruiser models, as well as CORE brand vehicles, will transition to the Isuzu NPR Series Class 4 platform. These iconic overland models have earned a reputation for providing the ultimate in self-contained, off-road world exploration vehicles. With this new platform, EarthCruiser continues its success story by combining the proven performance of the Isuzu NPR chassis with EarthCruiser’s proprietary 4×4 drivetrain and unique upgrades to create the most agile and capable vehicle in its class. The Isuzu NPR chassis underpinning new EXP, FX, and CORE models offers an ideal size footprint with proven performance and dependability. EarthCruiser modifies this Isuzu platform for off-road use and applies its overlanding and engineering expertise. The end result is not only an incredibly capable off-road machine, but also the only production cab-over 4×4 vehicle in its class available in the U.S. “We look forward to this new chapter, as we make the transition to Isuzu platforms for our 4×4 world-exploration vehicles,” said EarthCruiser General Manager Chad Knight. “Isuzu’s reputation for reliability and serviceability make it a great partner for our next-generation chassis. We’ve also found a great fit in Isuzu thanks to its shared commitment to domestically produced vehicles. ”The Isuzu NPR gas-model chassis is assembled in Charlotte, Michigan. The Isuzu NPR platform also benefits from an American-sourced power plant, a 6.6L, 350 horsepower, 425 pound-feet, V8, produced by General Motors for use in Heavy Duty pickup trucks. In addition to packaging benefits, a cab-over platform also aids in overlanding and off-road drivability. The cab-over position offers unmatched visibility, critical in complex off-road situations, along with remarkable maneuverability. A cab-over design also enables the shortest possible vehicle with the largest possible living or cargo space. In addition, the completed EarthCruiser has a remarkably tight turning radius (36’ inside diameter), roughly the same as a midsize pickup truck.

EarthCruiser’s Proprietary Four-Wheel-Drive System

The proprietary EarthCruiser four-wheel-drive system is key in transforming the Isuzu chassis into a unique go-anywhere 4×4 expedition vehicle. EarthCruiser’s bespoke 4×4 system meets the unique demands of off-road exploration. Practicality, durability, and serviceability drive every EarthCruiser design, including the 4×4 system, which was designed with widely available off-the-shelf components.

“Our proprietary 4-wheel-drive system is constantly being put to the test by our team, and it continues to impress in a variety of conditions,” said EarthCruiser Engineering Development Manager, Austin Stiemer. “The NPR’s 6.6L 6L90 GM powertrain is a great fit with EarthCruiser’s custom gearing, delivering strong low end torque on the trail, while maintaining efficient highway performance.”

Transforming a two-wheel-drive chassis into an innovative 4×4 exploration vehicle was no easy feat — especially without altering its powertrain. EarthCruiser effectively strips the stock chassis and replaces the entire suspension and driveline with its distinct design, including an Atlas transfer case and custom Fusion axles fitted with Auburn electronically locking differentials. The result is a rugged 4×4 system that does not compromise the vehicle’s EPA certification. Each EarthCruiser vehicle is also certified to meet and comply with stringent FMVSS and DOT standards.

EarthCruiser remains committed to supporting its Fuso-chassis models alongside the new Isuzu-chassis models, backed by an international network of service and support centers.
